Chatham Police Union
Chatham-Kent Police Association (CKPA) Union comprises of a ten-member executive boards representing 68 civilian members and 170 sworn members of Chatham-Kent Police services. Every member of this unions has money deducted from them on every pay and is collected by the Union of police. CKPA proudly sponsors many community organizations, and it has provided over $8000.00 donations to various organizations. The donations include Good Fellows, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, St. Clair Catholic District School Board, Kiwanis Club of Ridgetown. Others are Canadian Cancer Society - Ridge Town Figure Skating Club, Ursuline College, and Dresden Saddle Club. Others are Chatham Minor Baseball, Robert Warner Memorial Fund, Ontario Police Memorial Foundation among others.
Savannah-Chatham Police Union formation was during the 1790’s and has been protecting the Hostess City for more than 200 years. General James Oglethorpe in 1733 initiated an expedition that led to the founding of the City of Savannah in bluffs that overlook the Savannah River thirteen miles away from the Atlantic Ocean. With the growth of this city, the leaders saw the need to form a system of the patrol to enhance security and protect the town. The guard and watch program was formed on June 20, 1796. It comprised of a staff of 28 men who were under the command of a Captain. These early peace-keepers only did the night duties and used horses to patrol the town. It was until 1812 that they started wearing distinctive uniforms with brass buttons (SCMPD.ORG, 2015).
Currently, Chatham County works closely with the Savannah police union in patrolling various areas in many different ways. Initially, the officers worked together by road horses and walked their beats. Currently, they are using motorcycles and cars in patrolling neighborhoods and various shopping area. The mission of Union County Sheriff’s Office is to provide firmness, respect, fairness, integrity m, honesty and excellences in their professional law enforcement services. They also aim to work with valor and compassion to the Union Country citizens. The Search and Rescue Unit of the Union is highly trained and very active. It is formed by trained volunteer citizens and readily available to assist citizens. The union county makes use of Correctional Deputies and Reserve patrol in assisting the full-time staff of the police department in the county.
The County Commissioners are aware that the law enforcement department is an essential part in the creation of a livable and safe country. Therefore, the union calls for support from the country members in funding for the needed equipment, training sections, and professional deputies. The Union works closely with the community members and appreciates the efforts of its partnering agencies, such as Oregon State Police and the La Grande Police Department.
Chatham Union County covers more than 2,038 square miles and the sheriff‘s office through the law enforcement agency is in charge of the whole County. The patrol deputies ensure the security of the communities and other outlying areas. Deputies are also available to assist their partners from other Counties when requested. The patrol division comprises of thirteen full-time law enforcers officials. They handle patrol, domestic violence investigations and help, drug task force, K-9 Unit, animal control and marine patrol (Union country sheriff’s office, 2015).
