Ethnic
and racial inequalities
have powerfully shaped United States of America history
from its beginnings. Americans tend
to think of the founding of the Americans colonies and later
on, the U.S, as driven by the quest
for liberty. From the beginning, American society was equally
founded on brutal kinds of domination, inequality and oppression
which involved the total disapproval of freedom for slaves.
The working conditions of immigrant workers are
terrible.
The workers are vulnerable and they experience
exploitation in the United States. As
frequent they are victims of unpaid wages, dangerous working
conditions and uncompensated
workplace injuries, labor law violations and
discrimination in the
workplace. Workers who try to solve the
abuse face physical
and immigration related retaliation and threats. There are an estimated 6 million immigrant workers
in the United States, representing
a vital workforce in construction,
manufacturing, service, restaurant and agricultural
sectors.
The
workers are exploited because they are denied
most common protections. They are denied the right
to get the promised
minimum wage or at least the
minimum salary and overtime pay
for the work
mainly performed. The workers are also
denied the right
to safe and healthy conditions in the workplace. Also, the workers are denied
the right to receive workers’ compensation
benefits for injuries in the working
environment. Finally, they are denied right
to be free from discrimination
based on color, race, and national origin.
There
is great need to inform the workers
about their rights and roles under the employment
laws, to give excellent resources for enforcement of employment laws. Also
to increase workers to the legal system
and community organizing and to implement immigration policy reforms that will eliminate the vulnerability of immigrant and workers
of color. Currently, the movement of non-profit worker centers across the nation. It empowers
the immigrant workers to defend their employment rights and get
back their dignity in the working areas.
It is a central sign of progress. But is must be implemented with a real commitment from the private and
public sector to protect the rights
of all immigrant workers.
