Personal leadership interview
The
leader that I decided to interview is Kennedy who is a businessman who owns
various hardware stores. In the case of Kennedy, a typical day normally
consists of a lot to do, but not enough time to do it. Looking at Kennedy’s
personal life, he has demonstrated excellent leadership. Kennedy has a family
that he has dedicated to putting ahead of everything. While trying to make sure
that he can fulfill his personal needs, Kennedy always wants to make sure that
he does not deviate from his vision. During the interview, I considered asking
Kennedy about his story when growing up and how he managed to be where he is at
the moment.
He responded that being from a low-income family, he had to work
hard to make sure that he can afford to go to college and finish his education.
He had a vision of becoming an entrepreneur, and as a result, he worked hard
taking different jobs part-time so that he can afford to pay for his education.
With hard work and a focus on what he wanted to achieve, he managed to complete
his education and got employment
According
to Kennedy, the strategy that he used was having a vision and focusing on what
he wanted to achieve. Kennedy was confident and courageous and irrespective of
any challenge he encountered, he always ensures that it did not hold him back
from what he wanted. An important factor that made him successful is that he
knew what he wanted and knew how to get it. Therefore, working hard by taking
different jobs so that to finish his education enabled him to be who he is
today.
During
the interview, I learned that Kennedy faced many struggles when growing up.
Kennedy’s parents passed away when he was just a child and that greatly
affected him because he had to be taken into foster homes. That was a major
struggle that he had to encounter and he also did not have role models or
mentors to guide him through life. While he made mistakes along the way, he had
to learn from his mistakes and learn what is right or wrong all by himself.
Lesson learned
A
lesson learned from the interview is that having a vision is very important.
With a vision, it does create the desire to grow and also improve. With a
vision, it does guide a person to where they are heading and ensures that one
is on course during unexpected setbacks.
Organizational leadership interview
With
regards to leadership in organizational aspect, Kennedy does have a very
successful story in leadership. While he owns three hardware stores in
different cities, he had managed to a good leader, and that has contributed to
his success. After working as a business manager in a bank for seven years,
Kennedy decided that it was time to start his own business. He started with
just a small hardware store which he operated with the help of his wife.
Kennedy started that when starting, he only had one employee, but with time, he
was able to expand his business and created more branches, and he now employs
over thirty workers in his stores. Kennedy oversees all the three stores with
the help of his wife.
Kennedy
identified that the strategy he uses as a leader in his business is setting
priorities. When he set priorities, he ensures that they are on target and
everyone including himself is held accountable. He always tries to make sure
that everyone in the business understands their roles and takes first things
first. As a leader in the business, the Kennedy stated that he put a lot of
effort in guiding and supporting his employees. It is through his guidance that
he can influence the employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the
business. Developing a close relationship with his employees has greatly helped
in the success of his leadership position. As Kennedy had no one to guide him
when he was starting up, he always ensures that he can support his employees so
that they can make the right decisions.
According
to Kennedy, the major struggle that he has encountered is staying motivated
irrespective of what happens. At times, Kennedy would face financial challenges
and wonder what to do during such times. As a leader, a big mistake that one
can make is hoping that someone will motivate them; however, motivation always
comes from inside. However, irrespective of everything, he had remained strong
in his vision.
Lesson learned
As
a leader, it is always to stay motivated, and this motivation comes from
knowing one’s purpose. I also learned that having focus and maintaining it is
necessary to a leader. With effective focus, it comes from knowing what is essential
and choosing to focus on that particular thing first. While there may be
various distractions in leadership, it is important to know what to deal with
first.
